Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
I just bought some transformers from someone just now and sent them money as GIFT like I usually do to avoid any fees on both ends, but looks I got charged a 1% fee. Has this been happening for a while? It's been a while since I sent money though PayPal but I don't ever remember paying a fee when sending money as a gift.

Re: Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
Are you using your deposit account or are you sending via a credit card? There is a fee if you send by credit card but if your sending direct cash from your account then there is no fee.

Re: Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
For me, there is a fee when I send money, either credit or debit.

Re: Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
If you send money from your paypal account, or from your bank account, I don't think there should be a fee.
As someone above mentioned, I thought it only applies if you pay using credit card.

Re: Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
Nope, both options, Bank Account/PayPal balance and Credit Card had a fee. So looks like this might be fairly new.

Re: Sending Payment Through PayPal As Gift
It depends who you're sending money to. I'm not sure the exact rule, though.
I think it may have to do with the "region" of the recipient; I just tested on my Paypal; all the Canadians from my recent transactions would've got me $0 in fees when paid via my balance, but all the non-Canadians would've gotten me 1% in fees.

But how can PayPal know where a recipient resides? I always just send money to an email address. No physical address.
The currency was US dollars for my transaction earlier. So I thought maybe thats why. But when I go in just now and pretend I'm sending Money in Canadian funds, there is still a 1% fee.

This is not a new thing, it's been going on for several years easily.

Hmmm.
I'm not sure then, of the exact rule that's in place.
All I know is that if I send money as a Gift to certain people on my recent "send-to" list, I get no fees; while I get 1% on other users. I'm just not sure on the exact condition at which this happens.
Here's a couple of screenshots I took just now.
The top is me sending money to my brother. The bottom is me sending the same payment, the same way, to my usual proxy buyer in Japan.
I'm wondering if it might have to do with the recipient's default currency or something then? My brother's account is obviously in Canadian dollars, whereas my proxy buyer's is in USD.

Yes, but only when using Credit Card as method of payment. I've sent plenty of "gifts" over the years using my Bank Account and never had to pay fees before.

Ok this almost looks like PayPal is looking at the email host. Gmail vs Hotmail. But that makes no sense.
Anyways, thanks for the screen shots. Looks like PayPal is a bank now. They get you coming and going with fees.
