Bunch of POSERS around here!

I sure hope a thread like this doesn't exist, but I'd like to know how some of you guys here get your bots into such amazing poses! I'm the stoic type of poser, and I'm sure Soundwave is getting mad. I'm drawing the line with Prime, even though they look great doing the stoic pose.

But could someone help a dude out? Where the hell to start? There's so many points of articulation on the MPs in the first place, and I take a look at all the pics here and on the web, yet when I try to emulate them, it just looks 'wrong'

So..I end up back in Stoictown, population: ME!

I don't know much about anatomy in a functional sense, never took art classes. Please help, these MPs require more careful posing that what I'm providing, and my collection looks worse off for it.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bunch of POSERS around here!

I will sometimes try to get into the pose I want for my figure myself. If I find that I look or feel awkward (most of the time) or off balance (always!) then the chosen pose for my figure will probably be awkward or off balance. And sometimes I don't care and just have fun with it.

I use a lot of screen shots or anime pics for references, and of course other photography like you do. Sometimes it's all about the angle you are looking at it from, also don't forget, a slight twist at the waist, head or a tilt in the ankle can be all you need to go from awkward to natural

Its a great idea to use screen shots from real world scenarios. When I get my stuff in order I want to try software layering photo effects to see what kinda of dynamic shots I can create. Photo editing can be awesome

A thing you may want to try is to do a quick hand sketch of the image you wish to create. Something vague to build on. Great ideas can come from a McDs napkin.

I think my problem is the coordination of the various multi-joints; like in SW's knee, you have inward/outward flexion, but also at the hip. In order to make many poses stable (and cool looking) you have to know how much of each to incorporate. Same goes for elbow rotation and wrist rotation...each can compliment, or else just look blocky and strange.

Re: Bunch of POSERS around here!

lots of great advice here. Two things that work for me are:

1. Put yourself if the position naturally and then look at where things are, feet, knees, hips, shoulders are most important,

2. Then figure out if the toy cam do it. The articulability of MPs is not that impressive relative to other things. You, for example. So instead of pushing the limits of the toy, configure it to give an impression of the position you want. This is where angle of view comes into play.

This is kinda what I do. I also like to look up poses on google images for ideas.
