I agree. Providing you actually do the motions and don't just flick your wrist to trick the sensors.
On Wii Sports:
Boxing and Tennis will make you sweat. Golf and baseball will make you swear. Bowling's better for being more accurate with your Wiimote motions.
And plus it has the Mii Age thing where you do a bunch of random practice stuff and it tells you your "age" by your performance.
Lowest I've ever been was 25, which is 2 years younger than I am. Most of the time I'm hovering between 29 and 35, depending on the games it picks. On a really bad run I might register in the 50s.
But it only helps if you actually play it.
If I had a Wii, this would be my exercise routine. And I might even consider getting Wii Fit with the board, Wii Fit Plus, and Wii Sports Resort.
Maybe Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, and the winter Olympics sequel, but I was really never that interested in the Olympics. And in general I hate sports.
Basically, Wii would be my exercise machine if I had one.

I got my mother a Wii a few years ago at her request because she thought she would use it as an exercise machine. She did for a few months, but her interest waned and now it just sits there. I've been tempted to swing around and pick it up for me to use, but that feels a bit weird considering I bought it especially for her, and I don't have much interest in consoles.
Also got her Wii Play for the extra remote. And Super Swing Golf, which when I play it sends me into such fits of swearing and rage (the same kind I normally only reserve for Mario Party games), despite its cute childish anime appearance.

Using the Wii as an exercise machine is not going to drop someone from 300 to 200 in a few months. You need something as drastic as The Biggest Loser for that. But at least it is moving, and that's healthier than being completely sedentary.
