As much as I want to agree....I'm going to have to say Action Master Soundwave...he's damn near perfect!!!
Fine, Fortress Maximus (like chans formers said), nothing today comes close. Ignoring cost, he simply has so much play value.

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
As much as I want to pick a newer figure like RTS Lugnut or MP Grimlock, I think I'll have to go with G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime.
This toy had everything going for it by being big, fun, and a great version of the most iconic transformer of them all. Yes it may be a brick, but it is one heck of a fun brick. I had countless hours of fun and adventure with that toy when I was a kid, and I think that's what defines a great toy.
I think G1 Soundwave is a close second if not tied with PM Prime.

I agree! He was the only TF I ever really played with as a kid - there was one in a bin of toys my grandma kept for us to play with when we visited (which was a lot). I went back to that bin a few months ago to dig it out but he seems to have disappeared. I only found one of the cannons. Maybe one of my evil younger cousins got a hold of him...

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
Off the top of my head, my favs would be HA Jazz, FE Voyager Prime and MP Grimlock. I'm sure there are many more but it's late and I should go to bed.

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
Tough to say, since comparing different TF lines is comparing apples to oranges (in terms of cost, design, etc). Personally, in terms of value (low cost, lots of playability and a great representation of their animated/comic character), I'd have to say Classics Cyclonus (specifically the correctly coloured purple version from the Challenge at Cybertron set).

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
While "my favourite" figure tends to change once every couple of months, the one that seems to stick near the top of the list, IMO, is Cybertron Leader-Class Optimus Prime. Even without going into detail on how his playability is enhanced by other figures in the line, Prime himself gives you a fun, beefy alt mode, (who doesn't want their local fire department to have big ass murder-cannons on top of their trucks?), a simple but fun transformation, a nice little robot mode where his kibble can become a weapon platform, a super robot mode that kicks ass, electronics and gimmicks that can be enjoyed or ignored and that don't detract from the figure...and even a flying firetruck mode for goofiness and fun.
IMO, one of the best figure ever released.

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
Being one of the few around here who prefers movie style aesthetics, I have to pick Leader Starscream as my favorite figure. The amount of movie-style detail is amazing: wires, electronics, pistons, panels, joints, hidden weapons, etc. Amazingly accurate to one of the movies' best design. Satisfying transformation and a nice, beefy jet alt-mode.
Among classic-style designs I think MP Grimlock stands above the rest. The color palette (grey, gold, red) is brilliant and both modes display so well.

Re: Best Transformers Toy of your choice?
I think i'll go with the hasbro MP Rodimus figure just because they kind-of fixed the mold issue's from the first takara release and i think it displays good aswell.

His jet mode looks great along side the MP Starscreams. I would put Leader Screamer up there as well.
