This was explained much better in the novelizations...basically think of it like an electrocution...a huge amount can be damaging and coma (or stasis lock like Megatron was in) or VSA (vital signs absent) inducing. After some time a smaller shock (IE like a defibrillator following the metaphor) is able to bring him back to consciousness.
Basically too much energy can make one unconscious and a little more after can bring them back.
