Just saw this tonight too. Not sure I was shocked either way. It was ok, IMO. While I agree that character development was well-layered, I felt it hurt the pacing of the film; we didn't get to see them morph until about the last quarter of the film or so.
Goldar was terrible, but Rita was on point, and there was a nice fan-service cameo at the end. All the pre-release theories about the plot turned out to be true. The individual zords themselves looked better as a team than the combined Megazord look....a bit bummed about how they handled the combining process, and while the overall look of Megazord isn't as bad as the toys implied, it's still not great. The first time I laid eyes on a the movie toys, I thought Megazord looked like he was wearing fishnet stockings, lol.
At least with origin stories out of the way, hopefully the inevitable sequel is better because of you-know-who's-coming-next (for those that saw it already). Heard the showrunners supposedly have enough content in mind to make 5 more of these?!
