I think they sold well, but I hear what your saying though, I don't think they can get the same sales volume as you can with the movie toys. I think Hasbro has made the right call there as at least with movie toys you can still take actual vehicles and make them into Transformers.
But like I said Alternators are hard to market as they only ever appealed to the hard core collectors market. They sold well but with lines like the movie and Universe you can appeal to a much greater audience.
