It really isn't, that is what Disney does with Star Wars.
The cartoons don't revolve around the film continuity. Neither do the video games, or the comics, or the odd novel they bring out. Toys most definitly don't as we really don't even see film toys between films.
Something Hasbro has done well is offer something for all fans, not just movie fans. Star Wars could learn something from them.
