I'm pretty sure that the unopened policy refers to products that the customer just wants to return because they don't want them anymore, and damaged items are a different case entirely.
I've had Automaton help me out with a product that I got that was damaged right out of the box before. They were very awesome about it and helped me out a lot. Give it a shot!
