i think OP is asking more about REAL knock-offs (he mentioned G1 boxes and MPs), not those cheapo dollar-store god-awful-quality chinese text knock-offs. you will not find those in wanchai area because that's a toy distribution area (but still worth taking a look nevertheless if you are going in person)
here's a place your buddy can go to (google map it):
Richmond Shopping Arcade
107-111 Argyle Street
this place is known to have shady shops (but not all) with KOs. just be mindful not to pay full price for KOs
another place to go take alook is (again, google map it):
In's Point
530-538 Nathan Road
stuff are more legit there (action robo is located there), but maybe you can find KOs within the same complex
i still think yahoo hong kong auction is your best route for KOs since they are not that publicly shown
