You were supposed to put scanned items on the bagging shelf and there supposed to have a scale built in. But the Walmart self checkout thing has a handheld scanner that you can just scan the item on cart (meant for big items) or you can click the “skip bagging” on screen button after each scan. When I was lazy, have a couple of big items (eg 24 pops pack) and didn’t want to take out the rest of the items on cart I would use the handheld scanner.

He scammed $30k merchandises from stores and got noticed and tagged. He deserved it.
