The Wreckers were first introduced in the Marvel UK Transformers comics. They were mostly made up of characters/toys...

I think this is the same thing with some of the old Pretender shells, especially the Monster Pretenders, getting "sticky" or "oily" to the touch.
It's the chemical that makes the plastic rubbery...
