I'm not sure what you read, it doesn't sound like it came from the TFWiki.
The Wreckers were first introduced in the Marvel UK Transformers comics. They were mostly made up of characters/toys that were never going to be on the show, like the Jumpstaters, and the two Deluxe Autobots; Roadbuster & Whirl. They were supposed to be undertaking a mission which relied heavily on the involvement of Ultra Magnus, but he had to go to Earth, so the 3 Autobot Triple Changers were brought in to take his place.
Impactor was their leader and was killed off in the same story he was introduced in. He was a comic only character at the time. Springer was then made the leader of the team.
The first set of Wreckers figures we ever got were retools of the Fall of Cybertron Combatacons and were a combining team. This feature was exclusive to that version of the Wreckers, as they never have been before, nor have they been since, a combiner team in the main line continuity, or most other continuities for that matter.
