My take on the TFcon figure...

I am really behind on this one. I only got my hands on the bot late this past week. Hopefully I can get things done before the con, but I have hit a creative roadblock and could use some input.

I'm trying to give the head more of this feel:

Here is the potential redesign of Rager/Shafter's head that I have got done.

I think that I have been staring at the damn thing for too long now, that I have kind of lost perspective. The pictures don't seem to show everything, but I hope you get the idea of what I am going for. I'm happy with the sides and back (the easy stuff). However, the front/peak of the "hairstyle" is where I'm having issues.

This represents the 3rd take on the look. The original didn't come down to the triangle and was more straight across at the top (hope I am explaining that well).

I'm hoping to get the molds made for this guy later today. I need another set of eyes to critique this for me. Have at it boys and girls!

Head got revamped. Basically accentuated everything to make it clearer. I really wanted to texture the "hair", but the wax looked like crap when I did. I may or may not play around with it as I go.

Here's the head part deux:

I'm happy now with the look.

On to casting:

I didn't have time for the silicone molds, so I had to gamble on some materials from the office. Hey, if they are good enough for the mouth, they should work here... right? This stuff sets up in about 5 minutes, and still has some flex. I was able to put together the molds in about 15 to 20 minutes.

I learned a very important lesson with regards to casting the resin today. Make sure your materials are not old. I used some crap that was out of date. The result was an incomplete cure of the material, which also left contamination of the mold. I had to clean that sucker over and over to get that crap out. It ruined the first recast with fresh material because of this residue.

Thankfully, I was able to recover the molds and able to cast the head tonight. Took me a few tried to get bubble free... I really need to learn the tricks of the trade on this.

Voila:

Dye bath to come...

I didn't get to post these before TFcon.

Here's the finished product:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2020.jpg

Shaft-AR and his tech specs.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2021.jpg

Bot shot.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2024.jpg

Armed and dangerous.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2022.jpg

The best shot I could get of the finished head. Really crap picture. I need a new camera. I was happy with the result given what I was going for.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2017.jpg

Vehicle front.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...R/IMG_2018.jpg

Vehicle back.

It was a fun quicky custom. I got to play with casting, dying, and painting. I did learn a valuable lesson that clear coat and metallic type paints do not mix well. I had to redo all the silver after trying to "finish" it. Lesson learned.

Being in the dental profession you should have easy access to a pressure pot which will eliminate any bubbles in your casting. Are you casting in Jet denture acrylic?
