Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

7 Attachment(s)
Due to my very small budget and space available for a Transformers collection, can you help me decide which of the two incarnations of Optimus Prime I should keep? This choice is for the final piece in my collection. I have both loose in hand and don't know what to do!

Option 1 (Powermaster Optimus Prime):
- Takara Tomy Legends LG-EX God Ginrai (Leader Super Ginrai and Leader Godbomber)

Option 2 (Assemble the lot for "Sonic Wing Dual Savage Claws Mode" Optimus Prime, with one cat left over):
- Cybertron Leader Optimus Prime
- Cybertron Ultra Wing Saber
- Cybertron Voyager Leobreaker
- Cybertron Voyager Nemesis Breaker
- Universe Voyager Leo Prime / Lio Convoy

Please let me know which one you'd pick in the poll above!

To help with the decision, the rest of my meagre collection is listed below:
- Thrilling 30 Titan Metroplex
- Combiner Wars Titan Devastator
- Power of the Primes Volcanicus (Dinobots) + Slash
- Power of the Primes Abominus (Terrorcons)
- Combiner Wars Leader Megatron + DX9 upgrade
- Titans Return Leader Sixshot

Pictures are provided to see how the figure fits with the most of the collection (Sixshot and Abominus still boxed). For the Cybertron lot, poor Nemesis Breaker is left out of the combo again. ;)

How to combine the Cybertron lot can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrey70xgRt4

I essentially used some of the cash I got from selling my childhood G1 collection to buy these, as I dreamed about the posability of the modern figures as a child. It took a while to convince my wife to go along with this. :)

Powermaster Prime for the win. The other set is pretty fun though. They don't make sturdy-chunky toys like that anymore it seems.

Can I cast my vote for a new wife? :D

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

I personally like the look of the Powermaster Optimus Prime more so I voted for you to keep that one. But Cybertron Optimus Prime is widely regarded as one of the best Optimus Prime ever made and if you have Leobreaker and Wing Saber to go with it, it is practically the crown jewel of most people's collection.

If I were in your shoes, I would do everything in my power to keep both sets. Isn't there any other Transformers toy you can get rid of? Why get rid of the best of the best the franchise has to offer? This is really a keep my left arm or right arm decision here.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

No contest for my tastes, for what it counts. TT all the way. Were it me, and believe me, my budget and space is also very, very limited, I would consider either keeping both as, technically, Ginrai is a completely different character. Or, keep Ginrai and MAYBE Seige as Optimus? Based on either scenario, the oft expensive God Ginrai is the easy win for me. Then again, Unicron trilogy...meh.

Haha...

Many have pondered this option in their own collections too.

I prefer option 2.

Cybertron Optimus Prime is one of the best Optimus mold.

But if you are running out of space, choose option1. Because option 2 takes up too much spaces.

I have thought about keeping both sets, but wouldn't it be strange to have two versions of Optimus Prime for such a small collection?

And the fact that it's like choosing between the left and right arm makes it such a fun (but agonizing) decision to make, no?

I would ditch whatever is easiest to replace. If you regret it, then you can buy it back.

Yeah and the older cybertron stuff (especially with the accessories and keys intact) will be a real bitch to recover.

But it isn't 2 Optimus primes. It is Optimus and Ginrai, who just happens to look a lot like Optimus. All about perspective lol.

Ginrai, everything else you list for your collection is all Generations figures. Ginrai would fit better with that.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

I think the fact that you've got all the pieces to fully deck out the Cybertron version makes it a much more worthwhile figure to keep.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

Option 2 all the way.

That prime mold is amazing on its own but triple combined, it's a show stealer.

It's the one my nephews cry over not being allowed to touch.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

Option 2 because of the availability and playability.
Not to mention as a Ginrai fan, I much prefer Maketoys's version.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

I've never been aware of option 2 before this poll and it looks way better than dumb ol' wobbly ankles Ginrai.

I didn't know the second option could all combine!Would love to see a pic of that.

I think what tusks said makes a lot of sense.

That said, I think most of us own more than one prime lol

I uploaded pictures. See what you think of the combined form for Cybertron Optimus Prime. I had trouble finding him after all the stuff was added on.

Which one do you think is easier to find? I think I only ran into one set of used LG-EX Ginrai and one set of the Cybertron figures (that are reasonably priced).

God, it's like asking which type of brain cancer I prefer... But IF I had to choose it would be to keep God Ginrai. I love that toy.

I believe that we have VERY different tastes when it comes to transformers.

Keep the Ginrai.

I went with Cybertron. In my opinion, he’s just more actual fun to fiddle with. I always vote fun over fancy or hard to find.

I agree with this.

I did the Cybertron Prime assembly once way back. I find the Leobreaker/Nemesis Breaker arms to be too large and awkward. Wing Saber also doesn't help the look either. The way it bulks up the torso doesn't look good at all.

Keep them both instead of kicking yourself later.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

Honestly bro, Ginrai is super easy to find right now, so I would keep the Cybertron set because it's so rare and worth some dollars. You can easily repurchase Ginrai on Ebay or elsewhere later on if you decide to.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

Here's what you do. Combine the Cybertron prime into the full robot. Then transform Ginrai and G-dBomber into the truck mode.
Stand Combined Super Optimus on top of Ginrai, and display em both.
Alternately, you can leave the lions as their alt modes and stand them on the trailer of Ginrai.

ssjgoku22 11-13-2018 09:45 PM

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

The Cybertron Prime by himself goes for about $150 to $200 CAD on Ebay. You have Wing Saber and Leobreaker along with Prime. That should be push its worth just over $300 easy (if you have the boxes, that would make them worth even more).

Ginrai and God Bomber are sold together new on EBay for $250 CAD. They're also plentiful on Ebay and other sites.

Ultimately, I would keep both, putting one on display and keeping one stored away. But if I had to choose, on worth alone, the Cybertron figures are worth more and are much harder to find, so I'd keep those.

Re: Help with Agonizing Decision: Which Optimus Prime to Keep?

Thank you so much for the responses. The final voting results are 60/40 in favour of LG-EX God Ginrai, which is indicative of how hard the choice was.

I do think the Cybertron set is of superior quality. Those toys are rock solid, made to last, beautiful and is really fun. Not to mention the set was hard to assemble.

The God Ginrai is nice looking as well, but half the time I'm afraid I'll break something when I'm transforming them. The joints don't seem all that robust to me and will probably wear out after a few more transformations. The headmasters' legs and hip joints feel fragile. It seems like a toy meant to be posed rather than play with.

I ultimately went with God Ginrai though, and it's really for nostalgia. I grew up with Prime being a semi-trailer truck alt mode and a rather boxy robot form with a plate over where the mouth should be. Even though God Ginrai is a futuristic take on Prime that's armed to the teeth, I still see the old Prime in him. It also helped that Powermaster Prime was one of my favourite Transformers toy back then, even though it couldn't really move and it reminded me of a T-Rex with those dinky arms and large head. God Ginrai was the version of Prime I wish I had as a kid. Looking at him triggered many happy memories of childhood.

When I look at Cybertron Prime, my eyes see a superior toy to God Ginrai in every respect (my opinion), but I just didn't identify with a Prime with a mouth, a fire truck alt mode and angular cab design. I also didn't see any of the Cybertron cartoons and didn't know they existed until I ran into the toys on Ebay as an adult.

So I went with my heart rather than my head.

I'll be selling all five Cybertron figures (loose and complete; transformed once at most) as a batch with an asking price of $230. They along with pictures to my sales thread later this weekend.

Thanks again for all your help!
