Medicine Hat man charged in retail fraud targeting retailers

This story is a bit scant on details:

However, another story said that the accused man was modifying bar codes to a non-related item and then using the self-checkouts to get them for fractions of the price.

What a dirtbag. I hope they throw the book at him.

I also hope all that stuff circulates back into retail although it probably gets written off by insurance. In which case, make note of when the local police auction is!

Not much different than the people who return an old, different item in a new box just on a smaller scale individually but not collectively I imagine.

Don't WM scanners also factor in the weight of the item to see if it matches the bar code?

No. You don’t have to place the item on the scale to swipe the barcode.

$30000 of merchandises? I don’t condone such acts but he was simply too greedy, probably got too daring and was tagged by stores and cops. How many small time “toy swappers” and “bar code fakers” are there? And how many people just walked off with unpaid items? Judging by the store theft statistics, a lot.

I have seen a guy walked off with a TV at a Futureshop
years ago. I have seen ladies walked out with new clothes from the fitting rooms. Store clerks were not allow to pursuit (I asked), only security guards and lost prevention personnels can. Most stores like Walmart now have security guards posted at exits, but still this kind of scam is hard to catch on spot.

You were supposed to put scanned items on the bagging shelf and there supposed to have a scale built in. But the Walmart self checkout thing has a handheld scanner that you can just scan the item on cart (meant for big items) or you can click the “skip bagging” on screen button after each scan. When I was lazy, have a couple of big items (eg 24 pops pack) and didn’t want to take out the rest of the items on cart I would use the handheld scanner.

He scammed $30k merchandises from stores and got noticed and tagged. He deserved it.

I think that's more at grocery stores.
