I said I wouldn’t and I did. Go "figure."

My apologies as I swore I was not going to do this again but there are reasons and are as follows.

1) I think my photography skills have improved over last year’s pics.
2) New camera
3) New software
4) Lessons and various videos helped.

Also I didn’t want to, since I started a FB page and post pretty much every day anyway, so I did say it to you all last year and to a few people here on the boards individually. From January until October I said “no advent” probably twice a month only to be met with “you have to.” Then in October when I said it (because I had opened FT Dracula, POTP Novastar and the TF Con Sphinx) I was met with boo’s, various GIF’s of disappointment so I figured OK I still have a fair amount of things I hadn’t opened yet so let’s see first if it’s possible. (And I just want to state that all the “boo’s” and GIF’s were all in good fun, nothing mean spirited about them should someone think that way. Not sure why but just covering the bases.) When it came down to it, yes I did, but not all are magna spectacular but they are new (to me anyway) and sealed if the manufacturer packed them that way. Speaking of which I had also opened Magna otherwise he would have been a post of this as well. I have to recall how I did the past ones. Year 1 was based on package size, year 2 I’m still drawing a blank and I remember last year I went by weight (which was really fun). So for this year I’m going to go by name in alphabetical order but in a slightly different way. I’m not going to use the name of the character as he is rather who he is supposed to be. Example, since Dracula would have been on this list I would have done him as “D” but since he is supposed to be Mindwipe that how he would have been presented. Hopefully it will shake things up a bit so you never know what will come where. As of October 31 (probably before like the 15th I think) I did not post my hauls, I did not update the personal purchases list on the site so at least there will be a few surprises, I hope.

Now to be honest and fair I did open some upon purchase or arrival to check that they were in good condition, nothing broken or pieces missing. Believe it or not, I actually had that happen last year and had to scramble as to how I was going to get the item up after I had already planned the presentation order. Another thing I should mention is that quite a few of these figures will have a considerable amount of pictures so I will limit the posts to a max of 10. The full galleries (should there be more than 10) will be on my FB page so if you are on that platform you can click on the link in my signature and please like and follow the page if you are so inclined. If you are not but want to see the full galleries you can click on the imgur link and you will be able to see them there as well. There will be no bonus items at all; this will be a straight advent, 1 item per day and I will have something special for the 25th as I have in the past and as always I hope you all enjoy the show.

Dec 1 - Arcee MMC Azalea Asterisk Edition TF Con Chicago Exclusive

Not a clue as to why I bought her, guess I could say she was part of a package deal but in all honesty I think I got all excited when I saw it, thinking it was Salvia Prominon. I just remember “Oooo MMC lady, I think that’s the one I need.” To be fair I really don’t need another Arcee, I have enough, but since Salvia is so hard to come by (and I kick myself for not having bought her before) I am going to repurpose this Asterisk version as Solus Prime for the time being. I had an extra Hasbro Forge kicking around so I gave it a spritz and viola all done. One day I may apply some gold paint and if I ever get lucky with Salvia then great, if not then this will do. As for this mold, I’ve handled the original but it wasn’t for me to represent the character Arcee, the Takara version works just fine. I later picked up Eupatorium and the Queen set, sold the Nero Queen, had sellers remorse and bought another set a year or so later. Now I won’t go into any great deal on the figure itself other than to say I really, really despise transforming these things. I hate this mold, I hate this mold, I love this mold but I HATE transforming this mold. Sorry had to get it off my chest. I will never buy a transformer and never transform it but some are one and done like ROTF Leader Prime and others which I would do multiple times like TF Prime Wheeljack (I just love that toy for some reason). I guess another reason that I decided to keep her sealed was I had to figure out what to do with her at the time of purchase. I started a Fembot shelf earlier in the year but I saw no reason for her to go there. Then when I finally decided to empty my Unicron Trilogy Detolfs I wanted to have one for Unicron and his “heralds” and the other the servants of Primus and leaders of the Autobots (others besides Optimus and Rodimus but there is or probably will be one of each). As I am doing the repurpose idea she will take her place among the 13 (or whatever number I have to represent the 13 so far)

What figure is that? I don't recall any of the non-Salvia Prominon versions of that mold with the Hammer.

Dec 2 - MMC Ocular Max PS-04S Stealth Azalea TFcon Chicago 2018 Exclusive

Wasn’t really on the radar at all. I saw the pink prototype at TF Con this past year and was not impressed but I did get to watch a true master of photography take some shots of her which was a genuine treat at TF Con Toronto this year. As for this one I really liked that oddball crazy face and while not enough to justify buying it, I do recall skimming over some IDW history where Arcee was tortured and changed by Jhiaxus and somehow she was Galvatron’s sister or something in that Universe but don’t quote me since I know very little of IDW. Whatever it actually is if someone knows please feel free to fill me in. I figured since Megatron had his Nightbird originally then this could serve as Nightbird 2.0 meant for Galvatron. Too bad she didn’t come with swords because I think that would be really good for this psycho look so I’ll have to check around to see if I can find anything suitable. In hand I probably should have gone with my first instinct because I’m still not impressed. I’m not going rain a ton of shit of this figure but I’m not going to sing its praises either. If you are wondering MMC of FT then only you can decide, me personally I would go with FT over this anyway despite the transformation. I paid the same amount for both and think I get my money’s worth with Rouge.

Granted this is an exclusive and that was the only reason I went with it. For the good, I like the transformation as I think it is vastly superior to FT (very simple by comparison), the mold looks good and it has a vast amount of accessories and that is where the train ends for me. Articulation wise she has some great points but then also suffers because of it. The ankle tilt “breaks” above the ankle into the very past of the shin, then there is that actual break in the middle of the shin and very weak knees. With the legs being die cast as soon as I tried to bend her legs for certain poses, gravity just took over and she slide down the wall like a drunk college freshman. They arms are a PITA because there is no locking point for the chest. You rotate the shoulder forward and the whole chest is coming with it. The shoulder paldrons don’t lock in and constantly move. At least of FT (although not shown in the instructions) you can lock them in with the hood. Don’t get me wrong her upper body is not floppy it just doesn’t lock in anywhere. The alt mode is small but to be fair so is DX9 Terror and he unfolds to a total MP scale bot and she comes close so I’ll give her points for that.

Having interchangeable hands is ok for Marvel legends but I don’t think this was a good choice here. They pop of far too easily. In some shots with her guns they would fall out before the timer counted down. If she had no weapon the stayed in just fine. The faces I get but they could have done something better with the 4 main face expressions I think. Scratch that they might be ok but the yellow eyes bug me. Just a personal choice, they could have gone with red. The scary faces are a nice touch and enjoy them. I’ll stick with Halloween face for my display with a big friggin axe. Since I’m not really digging her as an Arcee, I’m gonna say the Megatron consciousness crawled its way back to the front of Galvatron’s brain, found Nightbird and used Unicron's reformatting chamber to make Nightbird 2.0. Oh and she really needed a pair of swords.

Dec 3 - Beast Wars II Black Lio Convoy played by Neoart Toys NT-11 Origin Xerxes

I picked up the original Xerxes at the 80’s show in Mississauga back in January but BoNKerS wanted it more so I sold it to him. To be honest it was an impulse purchase at the time and had no place that he would fit well in. In early October I finally figured one out and started looking. I have heard how great, how fragile, how potentially frustrating and how amazingly poseable they are but then when I actually started to look for them how incredibly expensive they are now. With a little research I came across the Neo Art KO versions and how they had improved on the original in terms of tolerances. Unfortunately I didn’t realize until after I had bought them how many variations there are and couldn’t really verify if it was the original look or the origins look at the time I placed my order.

Now that it is in hand from what I have seen on the package it is indeed the “origins” version so let’s crack him open (or I guess I’ll crack him open) and see what we have. Well out of the box the left foot was SUPER loose but I pushed it down and I guess the ball joint popped in place. His left antenna was off and continues to fall off and same with a plate behind the left forearm. Yeah it’s a KO but shit ppl glue is your friend, so I will have to add some dabs here and there. Lots of accessories, extra pieces and really stunning to look at with plenty of die cast. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to balance him though but once I did he seemed OK and he poses like a champ. Have to say I was shocked at the red claws being metal and look phenomenal. Well about an hour has passed since I’ve pulled him out just checking out various things on him, testing tolerances figuring out all the accessories so yep there is a ton. The big blue sword is nice but no idea what is called. Parts have been falling of this thing all night unfortunately so I really have to get around to gluing them in. I’ve seen reviews of the original PE figs and the looseness on them but once I started popping things in place there was nothing loose left. The transformation is very simple except for the lion head. The SOB wouldn’t tab together no matter what I did and his overall articulation really suffers in beast mode. I really couldn’t think of much that I could do with him being that limited for pictures. Bot mode he really shines (as long as the pieces stay on) his paint scheme is nice, application is really well done as I can’t see any chips, scratches etc. but I’ll see what happens when I edit the pics. I’m happy I got him as he looks great, not happy that I’m going to have to spend time fixing it, but given it’s a KO, you get what you pay for I guess.

Dec 4 – POTP Decepticon Pretender Bludgeon with Quintus Prime

It’s nostalgia for any of these so there isn’t much I can say about them. PITA that Hasbro and Takara decided to go with the exact same paint apps because I ordered two Tak’s that turn out to be exactly the same as the Hasbro so I’m sitting on two sealed ones that I will now have 0 use for. Anyway one thing I will say is that the legs on them are better than the Metalhawk one I got because I can barely get him to stand the pin is so loose.

Anyway not much to say about them other than at least some of the later original run toys that never made in into the G1 cartoon or Masterforce characters are getting some love. Also a shame that they didn’t do a Diver/Waverider since it would have been nice to have the 4 main Autobot Pretenders from Masterforce.

Dec 5 - POTP Cindersaur

I bought Slash when she first came out but never got around to opening it after a week and she just didn’t work for me so I took her back. If I had gone for the POTP Dinobots I probably would have kept her but since my CHUG Dino’s are all FP she just doesn’t fit. Now for Cindersaur I at least have a vague connection to the G1 toy and character so I bought it. Not too shabby for a legends figure but no matter what I tried I couldn’t pull off the running pose from the package. Sometimes I can get lucky with balancing but not in this case. Anyway dino mode is ok but bot mode surprised me a little with the bicep swivel that I wasn’t expecting to be there and good balance for a little figure. I guess because Slash was female I will treat this one the same and she can join my female con shelf (although they do have Predaking behind them but Feral Queen is there so she can rule them all).

Dec 6 – Cliffjumper played by X-Transbots Toro

Why Toro and not Hellion? I don’t like that silver piece between the bottom of his chest and the top of his waist. I don’t know why it bugs me as much as it does and both BoNKerS and hard_return have taken amazing pictures of him but I just can’t get over the look of it so I went the XTB route. Now I am hoping there are no clearance issues like I had with the Windcharger or Beachcomber. XTB seems to be all over the map with their figures so let’s hope that this is one of the better ones (although I already know I’m not a fan of the backpack) so let me get this open, shoot some pics and see where we end up. OK back and ….. meh.

I still prefer his look to MMC but right out of the package the little “hood gun” fell off from the square that holds it so had to glue that. One of the pics I took with it, it wouldn’t even go in and not sure If I have the time to redo that one. Car mode looks nice; wheels have a tendency to shift if you not careful. Transformation was really simple, not one clearance issue from what I could see and bot mode is decent. The backpack is there and that’s fine but what bugs me more is the hollow gaps on the side of the biceps. Third shot I took was from underneath shooting up and it didn’t matter what I tried some kind of gap was going to show somewhere on this arm and that is disappointing. Shoulder ball joints are really noticeable and I can’t “unsee” them now which I also find disappointing. The knee joints are unbelievably stiff for being soft ratchets but in spite of all that he doesn’t feel fragile in any way, not worried about anything breaking. The guns are a bit strange as they don’t quite line up “right” and I can’t explain it better than that. Putting them in his hand and trying to match up the pegs to the holes can be a challenge and once in they don’t point the same way as the arm, they are just “off.”

He also comes with a ton of accessories, most of which I don’t recognize. The glass gas hand attachment and 1 pistol I get but where did all these other weapons and the staff come from? Other universes maybe because I don’t remember them in the G1 cartoon. Please let me know if you do. Beyond that I think it’s a good enough CJ but could have been better. XTB like PE is jumping all over the place with the design and quality of their products and is giving me serious thoughts as to what 3P company I really want to give my money to in the future. At this rate I may only stick with 3: Fans Toys, Maketoys and MMC (I see you smiling) but let me know what you think cause we are only 6 days in and quite a few 3P figs are yet to come.

Dec 7 - Cyclonus played by Fans Toys FT-29 Quietus

Ahh Cyclonus, how wonderful to see you again!

3 years, we have all (at least for all of those that wanted FT) been waiting for this. 3 DAMN YEARS from the time the silhouette was revealed until we have gotten him in hand. Back when I bought Andras I figured Eligos would be the next logical choice but then FT dropped a bombshell or so I thought at the time. I didn’t realize how big the 3P wars were going to be where someone came out with a product, another company dropped in and then FT would drop the bomb and say hey we are doing one too. So no one buys the other stuff because they want Fans Toys (skullface voice implied) myself included (NOTE they dropped a lot of stuff lately for Q1 and but I’m not trading up anymore to expensive). That is until Takara jumps in with an official and everyone jumps into that bandwagon. Fortunately I don’t jump the bandwagon from FT to Takara (with the exception of Quakewave and I’ll never do that again).

I’m glad that Takara is doing Hound but my Willis is just fine. I don’t think I’ve had many issues with any FT product (aside from them always putting upgrades for previous figures into new ones that you have to buy if you want the parts), I love the figures although some transformations are a pain but that happens with a few other companies’ products as well (XTB I’m looking at you). So now the question is “Was this worth the wait?” I’m not sure so let’s find out. I saw a review the day after I got him and was not pleased with the transformation so I have my rum and cokes (yes plural) in hand to prepare for said transformation. He’s purrdy but that’s where it stops for me. I think they did a great job on him but he never really had much personality in the G1 cartoon (until Starscream possessed him) and even that comes through. I can’t get a feel for him at all. I guess it’s because I never had much attachment to him as a character in the carton unless he was with Galvatron. Nightstick is something else. The left leg on mine doesn’t stay together with any movement but then I’ve never really tried to pose the Targetmasters much before.

I tried the IDW incarnation of Cyclonus first but as I’ve not yet read the comics I decided to read his character fiction first to see what he was like and who he is and was quite surprised with what I read. They really did some development with him there. I don’t like the look of it and it was nice to have them include parts so you could get him to look more that way, it’s just not for me.
Having him in hand showed me I need a new light setup (actually just better diffusers) because his chest is super shiny and my lights were bouncing off him like mad so I did my best to hide them. For the transformation I would say it took about 15 minutes (25 for the pauses on some reviews) but overall finicky, not as bad as I thought and 0 alcohol required. He’ sleek, he’s gorgeous in this mode and the whole cockpit issue I don’t get. Mine seems ok to me but perhaps there is something I can’t see (technically I have to get an eye exam next year so maybe that has something to do with it). Some of the tabs needed are folded away and have no locking point so you always have to watch that they don’t move when trying to tab it in. When I think of the last horrific FT figure transformations I didn’t find it as bad as Kup, Willis and especially Arcee (damn was THAT a nightmare). Last thing about jet mode and the single biggest letdown I have come across is where the hell do you plug Nightstick in? How the hell does FT come up with all this engineering, include extra parts for another incarnation and yet somehow overlook the Targetmaster attaching in vehicle mode. Like dudes, at FT, seriously wtf is up with that? I cheated and tabbed him into the panels on the top of the nosecone because it was the only thing I could think of.
OK word of warning after I put him back into bot mode, the metal knee caps rest against the bottom of the chest and caused some minor scrapes there. Not highly visible but I can see them with no issues so not really a good thing there. Now that I have finished the gallery the trio looks solid but now find myself waiting for and wanting to see what they do with Scourge. As nice as Andras is he seems a bit out of place, not much, but just a little bit. As I’ve had a few hours to collect my thoughts I still think he’s stunning but if a figure was ever supposed to evoke personality I would give it to the IDW look over the G1, even with no connection to it, it speaks volumes IMHO.

As always, your Christmas countdown and those fantastic pics are a joy to see. I've thought more and more about 3P offerings lately, and your Not-Cliffjumper and Not-Cyclonus galleries are doing a lot to sell me on them, lol. Great work dude!

Dec 8 - Grimlock played by Fans Toys FT-08 Grinder

OK, so much like this calendar I swore I was not going to buy this. At all. Since I planned the Unicron Trilogy dump and Grimlock was Autobot leader in the comics my Takara MP can go in the “Primus/Autobot Leaders” Detolf and this would justify getting Grinder. I could never sell Tak Grimmy because his price just bottomed out almost as bad as Apollyon and I can’t sell a figure for 25% of what I paid for it, I just can’t (well not for one that expensive anyway). I already had the OS Grimlock in the past but it didn’t work for me. Could have gone with Gigapower but since I already have 4 FT Dinos then might as well go the rest of the way and finish them off. Thanks to Madhaus I can say the FT Dinos are complete.

As for the figure, he’s big, beefy but lighter than I thought initially, but I think it was because I was holding MMC Magna in the other hand at the time but even after opening he still seemed lighter than say Sovereign. I disliked the Dino head intensely from day 1 (which was another reason not to buy initially) so I bought the G1 style head. I really can’t say much more in terms of anything, it’s Grimlock as there were really no surprises. If anything I’d have to say the biggest surprise was when I had to shoot Takara MP Grimlock I had forgotten how bad his hips were in bot mode.
