aren't you a bit too late for boxing day/week?
all the good ones are gone and the leftover will likely go on January clearance sales.

I think you should go with either LCD or LED. Plasma looks better than LCD, but has it issues. I think LED is the best, but it's newer and pricier. Sharp has this Quattron tech in their Quattron line of LCDs that adds the yellow pixel to the mix of red, green, and blue, and supposedly gives richer colour (especially things that are yellow). I don't know how much of a difference adding the yellow pixel makes, but is something to consider and look up.
Dynamic Contrast ratios are a lie, don't believe the numbers. If you're a gamer you want something with a low response time or a "gaming mode" because of lag. Sometimes having a low response time and a "gaming mode" is not enough, some TVs are just bad, so do a bit of research.
What I would do is go to a FS or BB site and pick out a TV you like and then search for reviews on that TV. Looking at them in person is not enough, stores tweak the settings in such a way that are misleading and won't represent what they will look like at home.

I have a 32" Sharp Aquos that I bought 4-5 years ago and haven't done much research since, so my info is pretty outdated. At the time, Sharp Aquos were the best in terms of price, performance, and quality over its competitors.
Newer TVs these days are bananas. My friend got a ultra thin LCD (think it was ~36")(Sharp I think) and it has wifi, usb ports, and built in DivX codex. It's pretty sweet and only cost him $800 or so.
Oh, and don't get a 3D TV. Unless it's included in the TV you want and aren't paying more for, don't get a 3D TV.
Hope that helps as outdated as my info is.
