lol, I see you're happy we finally got a separate kitbash thread.
Those are amazing customs. That's what I love to see, originality. and I think that's what makes your work stand out from the rest. and that's what I go by. I don't like to make the same thing every one else is making, I like to keep things different. Awesome job!

I had Transtorture custom battle damage a Classics Optimus Prime for me, it turned out amazing.
He even let me submit the kind of damage I wanted such as the waist gouge that Prime suffers in the 86 movie from Megs.
I am looking for a reasonable classics megatron on ebay for him to torture.
I have a pristine Classics Prime next to the battle damaged one, looks great.

What do you use to apply the battle damage?
Mostly a dremel cutting disc and a red hot metal rod.
I will be doing a photo tutorial for tfw'05 in the near future, perhaps I can post it here as well ? ...w/disclaimer...;)
It can be very dangerous and I wouldn't recommend anyone younger than "adulthood" attempt this kinda thing.
I'm cool with posting a tutorial here too.

Very good job on this one.
Picture #2 I think looks really gruesome with the lower light and more shadow, it makes it look like he's covered in blood stains.

They're NOT easy to let go but I can always make another if I want to keep one in particular.

Would it blend better if you use gunmetal for the areas in btwn MP Prime's finger joints?

Dark Awakening Zombie Prime...(1 of 2)
I wasn't going for 100% accuracy mainly because the damage changes throughout the scene(s) - In the cartoon he's got damage one way then in the next scene he has damage in a different way....:o
Also I switched the arm damage around just cause it works better for the figure.

As I said in PM, but worth repeating.
Total sweetness, Damage is subtle.
Love the blown hole in the glass and of course the ripped off hand is vintage TTT.
You even put long stack on him nice touch. I dare anyone to say this one is "over the top" or "too random".

MG Gundam kits cost around the $50 range too, and PG might be near the $100's so this is probably not that much off...unless you do the plain non-MG 1/100 models.

That's only if you buy it locally, Anime shops have insane mark ups on model kits. I regret buying so many MG kits for $55-60 each in high school.
If I plan to buy model kits again, it'll just be a batch through an online website (like HLJ), with the exact price of the model kits, usually $35-$70 with direct Japanese Yen conversion.
If you order more than 1 model kit, it'll usually be cheaper than buying one kit locally, even with shipping.

Good 'ol Smokescreen !
This was my first attempt at selling a battle damage TF, the idea came to me when a toy had fallen off my display shelf taking Alt Smokescreen with it, when I found the wreckage Smokescreen was busted in 2 at the waist - what to do ?
After gawking at this figure for a few weeks I had an idea to salvage this guy and make him into a battle damage TF - why not ? he's already busted in 2, what have I got to lose ? !
So this would be a prototype if you will....an experiment.
It came out OK....at best, I knew practice and better methods would be the key to make this convincing.
I searched the web for others doing this and found nothing so decided I would take a stab (lol) at another and sell it....who knows, I might get my money back...;)
So this was it, pictured below is my first sale....$102.50 U.S. not bad....for a first try at selling.

Something I just came up with...
I was trying to make the Cobra Trooper from the first Cobra box set....
I used an Air Trooper and a wave 2 Trooper (with hole in back !) seen here as Hasbro makes them:

Instant Red symbol Trooper (I just have to paint his neck flat black...heh, red neck Trooper !)

Battle Damage for Dummies ....like me.
DISCLAIMER:
* Before you attempt anything in this tutorial let it be known that this involves techniques that can cause severe burns as well as the use of a "dremel" power tool with cutting disc which can cut through you a lot easier than it can cut through plastic. Proper eye wear protection is essential to avoid flying bits of hot plastic in your eyes.
* Keep children AND pets away when attempting any of these techniques.
* Work in a well ventilated area as some techniques involve melting plastic - you do not want to inhale any smoke or paint/glue fumes.
* Know/learn how to use tools shown here properly before attempting any of these techniques.
* Author of the tutorial and any website it's linked to is not responsible for any damages or injuries as a result of attempting any of these techniques.
Alrighty ! Here we go...
Here is Alt. Silverstreak, he's gonna help me show you how we do things around here...

2 things you'll need : a solid metal rod, I use shower curtain rods.
Bobby pin. (Guys get your gf to pick these up for you - save yourself the shame - LOL)

First were gonna create some laser wounds & small dents and fish out an eyeball...
Laser wounds: I use a (mostly)straightened metal curtain rod, I get the tip super hot almost red hot - I'll let you decide how you heat yours up, use a safe heat source ;)
Once hot apply the rod to the desired location on the figure and PUSH ! - But be careful !
Melting plastic should be displaced around the wound, pull out your rod (... never mind...) soon after, if you leave it in too long the plastic will harden and crack as you remove the rod.

Dents: same thing, just heat up that rod and touch areas where a dent is needed - this work great on a corner like near the top of the head.
Eyeball removal:
I mostly use the bobby pin for this but sometimes if I'm going for a more gory look I'll use the curtain rod. Just get it red hot and PUSH !

Lets get crackin on some glass shall we ?
You'll need a pin for this one, if this was an MP Prime I'd use something bigger like a boxcutter or Exacto blade.
It's almost as easy as it looks:
Start by scratching a small circle as the center point then scribe in some long outward lines from the center of the circle.

Start in the center and slowly scribe your way outwards connecting the lines but try not to make them match up as you go, random pattern works best.

Other cracks:
For a more simple crack just scribe in by hand - practice on old CD cases.

This head light is made of very thick plastic so it's tough to work with - some are easier(Mirage) than others.

Body Cracks:
I just use a boxcutter scribing in cracks on an angle, again - practice on old CD cases.

Cuts & more Severe Damage:
Dremel and cutting disc will get the job done. This more than anything else shown here is what will take the most practise to perfect so practice on what you can - KO's other toys etc.

Blown Off Hand:
Remove fist, cut the end of the arm off at the wrist.

Cut in lines of different depths and widen the cuts where the wrist was.

Try to arrange the blown off tips at different heights and sharpen them up a little with the dremel & disc.

OK we're ready for paint...
First thing I did here was dirty him up all over, this is done by giving small areas a good coating of flat black maybe watered down a little to get INTO all those hard to reach spots then wipe it off.
I usually do this within 1-2 square inches at a time.

Now do that with silver over your cracked glass ! ! !

While you got the silver out start touching up all those wounds ya burned into him...

You can also run your brush along the leading edges to give him a weathered/scraped up look.

Once everything has dried I will go over all the silver added to the wounds with a flat black wash. Done painting.
Wiring:
This is tough to explain cause I do it different every time.
This one I wedged in some metal wiring, crazy glued elec. wiring to it and added some ripped bits of tinfoil(industrial) to fill in the spaces.
I can't really plan anything until I have the arm opened up - then you gotta work with what you got. Wiring on the main body is usually attached by unscrewing parts(seat or inner grill), wedging the end of the wire under the part and screwing it back down.
One thing I ALWAYS see on battle damage figures with exposed wires is brand spankin new clean cut wires...take some needle nose pliers and get crazy, squish bits here & there - kink it, twist it... and FRAY the wires ends - make the wire casing look burnt at the end with a touch of flat black.

Transtorture, have you ever tried, instead of using a dremmel, heating up the plastic until its a little softer and then using scissors or hand shears or an xacto knife instead? You might get an effect that looks like metal really bending and shearing, Im not sure though, since I dont know exactly what kind of plastic alts are made of. Also, have you tried drilling a hole and then just widening it with a hot rod for the "bullet hole" effects? It should turn out pretty good, and you wont have as much plastic on the outside of the hole above the surface.
Still, these things look killer, especially the predacons you did.

Still, these things look killer, especially the predacons you did.
The plastic used for these guys is very thick, I've tried heating it up but it warps very easily before you can do anything with it - and then it won't go back or stay on the figure or looks horribly out of place. Plus it looks a little melty when it warps, and thats not even burning it, just heating it up so its pliable and instant warp ~ ~ ~
Never use an open flame on plastic to heat it up, It'll look like burned pizza crust, so now the trick is to generate enough heat to make the plastic pliable without an open flame :o... ?
It's not easy, I've pretty much dropped that technique.
As for the drill, I'm not very good with one, especially on slippery curved plastic surfaces, but your idea would work, theres no wrong way to do it really. :cool:

I was going to suggest boiling the plastic, rather than using flame or something, but yeah, if its that hard to work with when its soft, it's probably not worth it. Have you ever tried using things like shears or clippers to cut pieces off? Or does the plastic crack when you try those?
It's still too thick for shears/clippers.
Just trying to clamp down and cut in is the hard part.

What I meant is that the battle damage is so busy that from a distance, they don't look damaged, they just look dirty. Battle damage shouldn't come from all possible angles imo...

That's the point of TTT's BD/Zombie custom's. It's the extreme side of BD.
Makes it look like the bot has been through hell and back, then decided to run back into hell and take on the devil himself just for the hell of it.

Well, I made it...
Didn't think I would make it in what with poor weather this time of year but I had to take a shot at it !
Here is my entry in honor of Vector, his name is Magnus Minor, sidekick to Alt. Magnus.
Made from Classics Cliffjumper and an Armada Prime(I think) head, following in Vector's tradition of repainting a red figure into a white one - not easy !
My first base figure broke upon disassembly, luckily I had another to try but if this one broke - it's all over !
Knock on wood - It was close.
What really convinced me to use this figure was the similarities to the Dodge Ram...sort of...had the hood scoop, spoiler & I had a spare head that worked for this custom.
Anyhoo the little dude would look great next to Vector's Alt. Magnus, hope it is enjoyed by all and is a fitting entry to honor Vector, our city commander.

just finished reading all 18 pages. I don't post on here much, but I remember seeing some of TTT's other stuff before this thread was made. Needless to say, you live up to your name! The zombies are definitely my favourite as I'm a big zombie fan. I was thinking about rust when I was going through them, it was good to see rust on your Skids. With the zombies especially, I think it makes the damage look not-so-fresh. It'd be cool to see you take it further, with the exposed guts and what not, but that's up to your own exploration I guess. I've noticed you're headed that way a bit anyway with the wires sticking out of the bodies and what not. :D
Still.. I'm not a big kit-bashing fan, but these really are works of art. They look really cool when they're transformed, too. Do you account for that or does it just work out that way?
Also, what is the paint you use? Just regular Testors modeling paint? Do you do any clear coating when you're done?

As for your Q's...
I don't put too much effort into vehicle mode but I try to make it look "good" some are easier than others, what's most important to me is bot mode but I always take Alt mode into consideration when making these bad boys.
I use mostly Tamiya acrylics as well as Testors Model Master acrylics and I just bought some Games Workshop Citadel acrylics, I don't use any enamels because they never dry on the plastic that TFs and Joes are made out of.
Clear coating (for me) is a no no, finer details can be washed out or colors can be altered.
Also clear coat sprays must be used the same as reg. spray paint so that can only be done in summer.
Ever make a perfect figure/model only to be ruined by the clear coat? - It's happened to me.
I also clear coated my Alt Rampage and the clear coat did'nt hold up or protect in any way shape or form.
Pretty much everything is intended for display only so its all good !

Dude, I'm digging the Ninjas, the look great. Bulkheads' head looks amazing too, reminds me of Trapjaw... two thumbs up!

As for tf-able...I suppose, I wouldn't tf a brand new one of these out of the box, mine broke just trying to get him to stand, never even got that far with him...I think I got a lemon though, this one was easier to pose and could stand on his own.

Hey that Megs must be hurting!!:rolleyes: Well done as usual TTT!!
I really wanted to do a Cobra de Aco (Steel Cobra) without the Snake Eyes head, something where you can see part of his face and switch to fully masked.
The answer was add Storm Shadows head to Flash and use Flash's helmet & visor(fits with no mods !)
Now, I like Flash's gun & all that...looks great on Flash but I switched it out cause I wasn't feeling it with a 25th figure - especially a Cobra.
Of course I went with a worn look as I usually do, especially cause this guy is such a bad ass !
For those who don't know, this was a COBRA character made in Brazil in the mid 80's - very rare figure which was made up of Flash and Snake Eyes head.

He is another Cobra N.I.T. Leader...something about this guy...he does NOT get along with Storm Shadow - at all.
Maybe he wants to take over as Cobra's top Ninja...or maybe he just wants Storm Shadow outta the picture...who knows ?
