View Full Version : Who watches a lot of Asian Movies

So I know we've got a fair amount of asian folks on the boards here so I'm just wondering if anybody is a fan of Asian films like I am. Heck there might even be a white guy or two like me who watches them aswell.
For a Transformers type tie in I enjoyed The Returner. It actually has a 747 plane transform into an alien creature. It was the first time I saw a realistic 'transformation' in a live action film. It was made in 2001 or 2002.

A few of my favorite films:
Bride With White Hair
Police Story1&2
Killer, Hardboiled
Winners and Sinners
Wheels on Meals
Musa the Warrior, the list goes on and on. I've forgotten many, many names of films as well.

Anyway if anybody else out there enjoys these type of films lets hear about it!

anything with: Jacky Chan, Samo Hung, and Stephen Chow.

Also some olddies like bruce lee.

and of course, Chuck Norris, which kicks everyones ass.

Forgot about Stephen Chow. Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle rocked. The only other of his films that I've seen was called From Bejing with Love and was kind of a James Bond parody. Didn't like it all that much.

I'd have to recommend Old Boy (Korean-movie) to this list; definitely had an interesting twist to it.

Thanks, I'll seek out Old Boy. I've liked a few korean films as well. Host was really cool, a movie called She's on Duty was very funny and the previously mentioned Musa was kind of a fusing of Korean/Hongkong film making.

Man, I love Asian movies. Big time fan of anything Kaiju, Tokusatsu, Chambara, shoot 'em gangster flicks, and of course, anything with ninjas!

One of my all time favorite movies ever is Ryuhei Kitamura's low budget masterpiece, VERSUS. This is a must see movie! It's got cops, gangsters, samurai, zombies, hyper zombies, fist fights, knife fights, sword fights, gun fights, past, present, and future. It's just crazy and awesome. I just picked up "ULTIMATE VERSUS" which is another version of the movie with new music and new scenes that they shot several years after the fact, just because they felt like adding more crazy stuff to it.

And yeah, RETURNER is a very cool movie too! Though one must admit that it rips off several Hollywood movies pretty blatently. That's the case with a lot of Asian movies recently, though part of the fun is catching what those references are. You can tell that these directors are just big movie fans and are doing that as a form of respect.

After seeing Tony Jaa's stuff I would love to get into more Thai films. And Korean movies too, as Dragon Wars looks pretty bad-ass!

I could talk about this stuff forever.

Hehe.. I usually watch Asian Movies by accident. Like "Once a Thief' and 'The Host' were all terribly dubbed, but a great joy to watch.

The borrowing of idea's does go both ways. Internal Affairs was borrowed(they call it remade), Matrix Trilogy would have sucked without Yuen Woo Ping's involvment and their big action sequence in Revolutions reminded me a lot of the Mech's in Robotech. Goes all the way back to the Seven Samurai. Robert Rodriguez even stated that the visual styles in El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time...were all inspired by John Woo films.

Also did you like the 747 transformation in Returner, Ninjatron? While not a robot I thought it was pretty slick. I remember watching it a few years ago and thinking"geez maybe they'll make a Transformers movie one day"

Yeah, that was totally cool. I saw the trailer for Returner that was included with the Giant Monsters All Out Attack, and I got really excited about it. I had never heard anything about it before, and then all of a sudden there was this clip of a transforming plane on my TV... I was sold! In retrospect that trailer really gives a lot of that movie away, but I had forgotten most of it by the time I finally saw the movie. Now I show Returner to other folks and they all think it rocks.

Another movie I like is Death Trance. It's sort of a period Samurai movie, except that at one point there's a motorcycle. And a bazooka. And vampires. And that's only the half of it.

Battle Royale anyone? First movie was better than the made up sequel imo, but the book is much better :)

Uhh the Singapore movie, I Not Stupid is pretty good. Lotsa laughs in that one.

Yes Battle Royale (Batoru rowaiaru) was an awesome movie. Returner(Ritana) was really cool too. Love the star Takeshi Kaneshiro (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0437580/) in it who was also in the Onimusha (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0277934/) video games.

Don't you find it funny how they take the Japanese sounding words in English and make that the title. LOL.

Also, those of you into Martial Arts films should get your hands on "King of the Kickboxers" aka "No Retreat No Surrender 4". Still one of the best Martial Arts films ever. Real hidden Jem.

Some of us know that Robimus is already a father, you've still yet to post in the Cybertron.ca demographics thread chisau :p I have a feeling you're a yuppie, heh.

I've watched the occasional comedy/action movies, Stephen Chow, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Faat, etc. I've enjoyed some of Beat Takeshi's movies (Not including MXC!), but it's harder to rent/buy movies from japan, let alone with sub titles. Altho not an Asian movie, I really enjoyed watching Dragon Boys on CBC, something a bit more local.

If it's not Action or comedy, I can't stand watching Hong Kong movies, they're usually too sappy and unrealistic for me. If you put a Chinese person from Hong Kong/Asia and a Chinese person from Canada here, chances are, they've got very little in common.

What about Casshern?
Casshern is FINALLY coming out on R1 DVD this year. I don't usually watch bootlegs or anything like that, esspecially if an official release is said to be forthcoming. Casshern got picked up for distribution by Dreamwork's foreign-release-arm fairly quickly after its Japanese release, but it got tied up in red tape due to the whole Paramount merger thing. I guess that's all cleared up now though, because it is finally coming out. I've been looking forward to seeing it after watching the trailer years ago, and now it looks like I finally will without having to resort to piracy.

Speaking of classic anime turned modern live action... Cutie Honey (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3061) anyone?

2 questions:
what "Cybertron.ca demographics" thread are you talking about? I must have missed that one.

and what's a "yuppie"?

Also, I like a lot of Chow Yun Faat movie, his english skills are much better then one would expect. better then Jacky chan and his crew. I like: bulletproof monk, crouching tiger, hidden dragon, he is also a pirate in the "pirate of cribbian" (which i'm going to cosplay on holloween).

I think I saw the live action 'Cutie Honey', at least I think thats what it was  . It wasn't real great, I'll have to double check next time I hit up Irben Entertainment here in the Peg.
Was it the live action your thinking of Dark Rage? or just the Anime?

Also I was just looking for an add for a PS3 game called Stranglehold, a game with story written by John Woo and staring the image of Chow Yun Fat. It's apparently a sequel to Hard Boiled story wise.

I wasn't referring to live action movies of animes, just action/fighting movies in general.

Also, to add to the list, I really like the "Aces go Places (http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews_2/aces_go_places.htm)" (aka Mad Mission (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtQMe3E_kj4)) movies, with the movie line going up to their 5th movie, they're a pretty good mid to late 80's Hong Kong action movies, with a lot of slapstick comedy, I'm not sure if they're as funny now (being 20 years old and all), but I find them funny with all their high tech, yet unrealistic and almost impossible gadgets, plus the bad special effects and props. They also have a lot some references to pop culture, such as the 2nd movie with Japanese robots fighting, or the 80's Hong Kong style of mobsters in same suits, same cars, and all chasing the hero in a uniform manner.

Either way, I buy knock off movies for HK movies, most Chinese people do too, getting the real ones is almost impossible to find and horribly overpriced by the import stores.

LoveHKfilm.com (http://lovehkfilm.com/index.htm)is a great resource for reviews, and has some Pan-Asian movie reviews (Some Korean, Japanese, and Thai (Ong Bok, etc.)).

A few more movies to add:

Sex is Zero (It's like the Korean version of American Pie, here's a clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnNqcmgAXSw))
Running on Karma

There has been far too little mention of gamera and his cinematic work so far.

Gamera is really neat. Also, filled with turtle meat.

For an example,

The Aces go Places movies are some good fun for Jackie Chan type imatations. I particularly like the one with the collection of James Bond villians, featuring some of the same actors as in the Bond movies.

Thinking of that series also makes me think of the Lucky Stars series of which Winners and Sinners(yes I know I already mentioned it) was the first film. Richard Ng is one of the funniest guys ever!

Also I'm glad that it was the Anime version of Cutie Honey that Dark Rage was talking about. Like I say the live action one is terrible, more of a soft porn than a film really. It might be good for a laugh if you do stumble upon it.
I'm not a big Anime fan but I have seen a few I enjoyed over the years. Ninja Scroll comes to mind immediatly, Vampire Hunter D was also good, Sol Blanca another. OK, maybe I've seen more than a few.........

Just checked out the new Jet Li film The Warlord, found it quite enjoyable. The brilliant Andy Lau is also starring, very epic at times but really more a character film. Takashi Kaneshiro is also as good as I've seen him in a movie in this one. Normally I find that he stands out as a bit too much of a pretty boy...:p ....but he really mucked himself up for his role in this one.

I love So Close, the elevator battle is really cool, its the first of a new generation of Moon Lee type chick action movies. Big step from the 80's junk. It does have the cheese factor I enjoy, but i found its direction quite good as well. Enjoyed the slo-mo stuff :D.

I prefer subs as well. Good Jap samurai action film Azumi and Azumi Pt 2, if anyone is interested.

Robimus
04-25-2008, 02:26 AM
Subtitles are the only route, dubbing likes to change words and entire stories, as they are usually dubbed by people who seem to have no grasp of english.

Sometimes the subtitles can be bad too though. I've seen two versions of the Bride with White Hair and the butchering of the subs has the film with pretty much two completely different endings, lol. One ending was like "Yeah, I meant to do it but still love you" then the next version had "I didn't mean to do it and I hate you". I was confused for a while......:D

I think I've seen Gangster High(Too many movies, too short a memory). The two Azumi movies I have in my own collection, really like them, almost live action anime really. Good Stuff.:)

Asian in North America usually refers to East Asia.
Asian in Europe usually refers to South Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.)

It depends on where you're from. It's subject to interpretation.

I was hoping to see the Shinjuki Incident with Jackie Chan, but it's one of his first non-action roles.

Plus the Sammie and Andy Lau pair has been going on for years. Sure beats the North American pairs like Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks since Sammie is so hot, lol.

It's just the lingo and whats been readily available over the years. In the past(80's) much would have simply been called Hong Kong Cinema, but as Korea, Thailand and more got into the act the lingo changed.

I've got several crappy multi-packs of films simply called Asian Action Extreme or other such goofy titles that contain both Japanese and Chinese films.

It's got zero to do with Geography or what countries are actually a part of Asia and certainly has nothing to do with an inability to read a map;). Think of it like French Fries:p

I hardly watch HK films anymore, it's just too sappy and crappy. Moon Warriors had Sammo directing Andy Lau.

Island of Fire and the Prisoner I've actually seen at some point, albeit well before I knew of Andy Lau.

And the Lucky Stars(Winners and Sinners) flicks I actually own and didn't know that Andy Lau was in them. Very old school, before Andy was a name actor in North America. Fancy that I knew Richard Ng was in them but not Andy Lau:p. lol

The scene where Richard Ng learns to turn invisible in Winners and Sinners is one of my favorite comedic scenes in a film ever.:)

I count about 8 movies. I think. Was she in all 3 Infernal Affairs. I want to say yes. But I think she was missing from the second one. That's what I get for watching them all at once.

I'm a huge Gong li fan. And that's when I was into the serious stuff. But all that stuff either gets too depressing, or too soapy. Most of the time the themes are same, especially the period pieces. I like what the Epics have evolved into in the past decade. But I gotta agree, its really only the stupid stuff that I can handle watching now. Just fun watching actors making goofy faces.
