I'm just curious as to why anyone would buy the 2-packs of movies that were known to be trilogies to begin with. Though now that I think about it, it could've been maybe because the expectation for the 3rd movie was so low that maybe the purchase wouldn't be necessary?

It's sorta like, who buys the "Harry Potter - Years 1-6" boxset? Or worse yet even, the "Harry Potter - Years 1-7 part 1" boxset? For HP, if you've waiting that long before buying a boxset, you can wait another year or two and buy the complete movie series...

Exactly. If you know your DVD, you know the studios will repack and repack the same cash cow movie a dozen time. Put the same disc in a new package with a different cover and call it yet another Special Limited Ultimate Collector Final Director Extended Cut Edition. Just look at Star Wars, Alien, LOTR... especially TV series too. I didn't buy any of the individual season of BSG and instead waited for the complete series box set.
